PARENT HOT TOPICS
Four H’s of summer – hot, hazy, humid, and hearing aids
New York City humidity typically approaches 80% most summer mornings.

Anita Stein-Meyers, Au.D, CCC-A, says that during the warm weather hearing aids can be more prone to malfunction due to higher humidity and perspiration. Moisture can travel through the earmold tubing and into the hearing aids.

Here are a few simple tips to reduce the need of summer hearing aid repair:

  • Use of a "Dri-aid" kit (desiccant) overnight to help remove moisture from hearing aids
  • Open battery doors when hearing aids are not being used to dry out battery compartment
  • Purchase super seals or hearing aid sweat bands to cover hearing aids to reduce moisture from seeping in. Email info@lhh.org for more information
  • Use an earmold blower (or rubber bulb) daily to blow out moisture from tubing

Did you know that water-resistant hearing aids are now available?
There is one company that manufactures water-resistant hearing aids that are very effective against perspiration. With one model, you can even go swimming without removing the hearing aid. If you purchase one of these aids, the League recommends purchasing a separate earmold to use with this aid, and consider a brightly colored earmold. This will make it easier to find in a pool, should it fall out!

DID YOU HEAR THAT?
Medicare now requires general practitioners to make sure that their patients have a hearing exam? Ask your doctor for a referral and Medicare will pay for the exam.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) affects 50 million people. For 12 million people, tinnitus is so severe that they are incapacitated. LHH has a Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Center. Call 917-305-7751 or email tinnitus@lhh.org to learn more.

The League accepts donations of old hearing aids and FM systems? We will put them to good use and you will receive a tax donation.

LEAGUE SOUND CHECK
When was the last time that you had your hearing checked? The League’s Director of Audiology, Ellen Lafargue, Au.D, CCC-A, says that every adult over the age of 35 should have a baseline hearing screening. This quick exam takes just five minutes and will tell you if your hearing is within normal range or not. If not, a full evaluation is indicated.

FREE Hearing Screening at the League at 50 Broadway, 6th floor
Every Tuesday, noon to 2pm
Every Thursday, 4pm to 6pm
Call 917.305.7766 or email appointments@lhh.org to reserve a screening time. (Tell them that the League Buzz sent you!)

KID COLUMN
Going to Sleep Away or Day Camp?

The League recommends that you include these things in your camp kit:

  • a spare hearing aid
  • Batteries and battery tester and enough batteries for all 7-8 weeks
  • a Dri-aid kit
  • an earmold blower
  • a listening tube (for their counselor/nurse to do listening checks; make sure your child knows how to use the parts, or send them with instructions)
  • Don’t forget to HAVE FUN!

What do you do when someone teases you about your hearing aids?

"I always say that some people wear glasses and some don't. I am deaf so I wear hearing aids." Zachary Cohen, age 9.

"I tell them that they should treat people the way they would want to be treated. Teasing is not a nice thing to do." Samantha Cohen, age 9.
