HEALTH CARE PROVIDER Multimedia TRAINING PROGRAM

Designed by the League's Center for Health Care Access (CHCA)

This training package raises the awareness and sensitivity of health care providers toward the communication access needs of patients who are hard of hearing, deaf, and deaf-blind. Useful for continuing education and staff orientation, it helps identify reasonable accommodations covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The videotape "Never Assume" concentrates on common sense accommodation suggestions and the use of sign language interpreters to facilitate communication. The "Unfair Hearing Test" audiotape familiarizes hearing staff with the "sound" of varying degrees of hearing loss. This helps medical staff develop realistic expectations and communication strategies so that critical information can be made clear. The Kit includes signs which can be posted to indicate hearing loss and accessibility needs. Also includes additional materials developed to educate, ease communication, and facilitate the cooperation and the care of this population. Contains referral information regarding NY State. Video (open captioned), audiotape, curriculum, kit, hard bound, 3 ring binder.
