Support For League Members & Their Families
In 1937, Miriam Nemeroff first walked through the League’s doors as a shy, retiring first-grader. Throughout her elementary and high school years, Miriam availed herself of the League’s speechreading and speech therapy programs, as well as the tutoring available through the agency’s very successful Saturday programs.
After graduating from mainstream high school with a commercial diploma, she enjoyed a long and successful career as a bookkeeper. Recent testing of Miriam has indicated that technological advances in hearing aids have enabled her to hear better than ever! Now 75, Miriam continues her affiliation with the League, by volunteering – five days a week, rain or shine.
To counter the sense of isolation which often accompanies hearing loss, and to reinforce positive, pro-active opportunities for interaction and recreation, the League sponsors enjoyable social gatherings and groups for deaf and hard of hearing individuals of all ages, and their families. Most activities are free, and no one is ever excluded for financial reasons.
