WHAT THE LEAGUE OFFERS
As a nonprofit organization, the League for the Hard of Hearing prides itself on dispensing hearing aids and devices that are the best fit for each individual. The League does not promote one brand or product, but rather assesses the individual’s needs and matches the person with the right aid or device for them. At the League, we strongly feel that the “best” hearing aid is the one that works best for the individual.
The League offers:
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Following an evaluation with an audiologist, a client may order a hearing aid through the Technical Services Department in the League’s dispensary. In addition to dispensing the aid, a typical dispensing session includes appropriate counseling on the use and operation of the hearing aid as well as various strategies intended to ease the period of adjustment to amplification. Follow up visits in the Technical Services Department are scheduled as necessary in order to both insure correct use and maximize client comfort.
Earmold Fitting
Expert dispensary technicians and audiologists take impressions for custom earmolds as well as in-the-ear hearing aids. Earmolds are available in a variety of styles, colors and materials and can be adjusted as necessary to insure a comfortable and acoustically appropriate fit.
Hearing Aid Repair
League clients are welcome to the Dispensary’s Technical Services Department on a walk-in basis for minor repairs. If a major repair is required, the Dispensary will facilitate communication with the original manufacturer and work with the client throughout the repair process. The League understands that it is very difficult for many individuals to function without their hearing aids and provides loaner hearing aids, whenever possible, during the repair period.
Assistive Devices Center
The League Dispensary’s Assistive Device Center hosts Free Device Demonstrations on Tuesdays at 1pm to introduce people to all of the wonderful assistive devices that are available. For those individuals needing a more personalized approach, individual consultations are also available.
Systems/Evaluation
Even with the best hearing aids, sometimes a person with a hearing loss still has difficulty hearing, especially in areas that are very noisy or when the person needs to hear a person speaking from a distance such as at a lecture or large meeting. An FM System is a wireless amplification system that is used in addition to or instead of a hearing aid to facilitate communication in difficult listening situations. It consists of a speaker-worn microphone and a listener-worn receiver. The speaker's microphone transmits sound to the listener's receiver on an FM radio wave. Many options exist for transmitting sound from the receiver to the listener’s ear.
Sometimes the FM system clips onto the bottom of a behind the ear hearing aid or cochlear implant processor; sometimes the user wears a loop around their neck that works with the telephone switch in their personal amplification system. Sometimes the listener wears a set of headphones or earbuds that connects to an FM receiver. In some cases a speaker is set up near the listener that is wirelessly connected to a microphone being worn by the speaker. To find out if an FM system would be helpful for you, talk to your audiologist about what situations are difficult and how these systems may be used.
