BEYOND THE TEST BOOTH
There are over 30 million people in the United States with some degree of hearing loss. The vast majority of this group is adults, with the largest percentage being those who acquired hearing impairment during their adulthood. Hearing loss can make communication more difficult, especially when communicating in group situations or in the presence of background noise. As a result, people with hearing loss often avoid certain settings that present difficult listening situations and express feelings of isolation.
- Cochlear Implant Support Group
Those who receive the cochlear implant must learn to carefully integrate a new world of sounds into their daily lives. As the number of people obtaining and considering the cochlear implant increased almost ten years ago, so did the demand for accurate information, advocacy and support. In response to expressed community need, the Cochlear Implant Support Group (CISG) at the League began in April, 1997. Even with resources regarding cochlear implant more widely available, the group forum remains uniquely helpful, allowing participants to experience the face-to-face immediacy of shared information, peer support, and informative professional guidance.
To our knowledge, the group is the first of its kind in the field, and the only ongoing group of its type today in New York City.
The Cochlear Implant Support Group meets once a month at 50 Broadway, 2nd Floor from 5:30pm to 7pm. Light refreshments are served. Please bring your questions, comments and personal experiences. A New York State Licensed Audiologist with expertise in cochlear implants will serve as the facilitator.
